ON FIRE

"...oh You sons of heaven, daughters of spirit, let´s overcome the next stair..."

" I´m on fire..." - scheint so...

Tracklist : Invidia, Leaving Ground, Ferryman, Satin Gardens, Ewigheim, The Sea Inside, And thus He spoke, The last of the Phanoms, Remedy, Snow... Encore : Valentine Decay

Postscriptum : Gruß und Dank nochmal an Silvan , Ricardo , Marko & Claudia und die Herren von Bloody, Dead & Sexy ...

"...oh You sons of heaven, daughters of spirit, let´s overcome the next stair..."

Even if it´s past for a few days now, the aftertaste of the concert still feels lovely in the head. It was really a great evening! From the strangely homelike atmosphere of the club to it´s charming and courteous residents. (From here another toast to Kevin , Larry , Falk , Merlin and the rest at the VL !) That girls can´t play table football shall stay an unproved theory, that playing the new songs made my flesh crawl is a matter of fact! " Invidia " is much deeper if it breathes and " The Sea Inside " makes homesick.
What remains, is the realising that Bio-wine makes drunken too, Halle has a lot of kindful inhabitants, coffee on motorway services will alaways stay a scourge of necessity and the hunger for the next shows. What is Antony Hegarty singing in the back right now? " I´m on fire ..." seems to be...

Tracklist : Invidia, Leaving Ground, Ferryman, Satin Gardens, Ewigheim, The Sea Inside, And thus He spoke, The last of the Phanoms, Remedy, Snow... Encore : Valentine Decay

Postscriptum: Greetings and thank again to Silvan , Ricardo , Marko & Claudia and the guys of Bloody, Dead & Sexy ...

HOURS

***************************************************

...now there are just a handfull of hours left ´til to the show in Halle and in any sort I´m curious about the way the new songs will sound. Nestled in the trusted past, they still seem to be strangers on home soil. Untamed and rampant...But who needs calculable emotion?

"... Two wildly different things please us in the same way: the habit and the new..." (Jean de La Bruyère)

VALENTINO

Endlich!

***************************************************

At last! At last „Red Valentino“ seems to find it´s deserved conclusion. Just here and there a few vibrating strings and we can (with a temporal guilty conscience) hand in our contribution to the „ Beyond The Horizon “-project. Indeed it took more time than planned and promised, but the result sounds soothingly on the other hand, to all intents and purposes.
When we decided to deal with a coversong again (back in last year´s november), it was down to the fact, that we had a concert with And Also The Trees ahead. Dirk visited one of their shows in London and there he got into conversation with some people of the AATT -fanclub, who (knowing about our part in the forthcoming show of the Trees in Berlin) faced him with the brilliant idea of throwing in a song to their tribute-project .
So let´s (gratefully) blame the presence of the muses for the fact, that our focus rested on our own songs over the last weeks and doing other people´s stuff seemed like committing treason, but now there are only a few acoustic details left and it is done.
I can´t remember why we choose this song then ( The democray is dead! Long live the democracy! ), but I like it´s atmosphere, it´s feverishness, it´s balancing act between motivation and illusion…„ in my stone solemn head I chase the paradise…

PROLOQUE

I see towers crumbling, feel idols stumbling...

******************************************************

It´s summer...somewhere...and the outside reveals me, that somewhere is here...sometimes. And when Mr. Blake meets Alice behind some mirrors, I wonder where these sentences are coming from...

It´s a fantastic feeling to realize the shape, the current bunch of songs are forming. Slowly, but the more intensively they reveal a structure, an organism, that detachedly breathes it´s independence from the last album´s echo. Playing "The Sea Inside" live for the first time ( at the Planet Wave Festival in Berlin a few weeks ago), was like waving good-bye to period, holding hands with the new one already. Yes, I´m really excited about the new tracks!
"And thus he spoke" is one of these janus-faced songs, with a mood swinging from elegy and melancholy to resolution and disarming..."I see towers crumbling, feel idols stumbling..." (in some way the album´s title becomes more and more visible!)
"Invidia" is a stylistical monster, with a dozen of heads wearing different masks (and one of the saddiest parts we ever wrote!) Still it´s a long way to the final album, but I´m glad about it´s direction, in spite of all distance. I´m hungry for playing the new songs live, hungry for seeing them grow up...

It´s still summer somewhere and Mr. Blake is singing lullabies for Alice ...songs of innocence...

7.00 Uhr morgens - Moskau

Back in the heart of Mother Russia…und keine Ahnung wo genau.

FIN...

***************************************************

somewhere in a bus ...somewhere...

It´s still dark outside and the silence and the monotony of the passing landscape makes it hard to divine any time. I´m tired, but comfort and wellness are shaking heir heads petulantly. I wish I could have any support by the jag too, so like the other ones, but there are only a bus full of sleepy noises and some bags of provisions left for me. Bread and apples…like from that book. Still two hours til to the next stop and my body is constantly asking for some nicotine, across the sleeping man is fascistically jostling with his feet and my body is constantly asking for some nicotine. On a monitor they´re screening a movie in almost every language of the world, subtitled with the rest and meanwile you´re faltering from the cultural shock, from the violent change of cheers and noises of nocturnal highways, I realize, that from this point on every single movement leads unavoidably back, back to the reversal point of the pendulum, somehow more determined than promised.

7:am - Moscow again...

Back in the heart of mother Russia and no idea where exactly. A station, that looks …of course, like every other station here in Russia. Tons of people, which are rushing, hustling, traversing, crossing, subverting…moralities and squares, streets and disorientation. Almost ten hours til to the departure of the airplane and so we´re ready for an overdose of Russian culture. At first…Mc Donalds…and an archaic victory over the demons in bellies and mouthes (p.s. even if they say, that the food here tastes the same way all over the world – the toilets are subjected to a heavy geographical divide!) And watches and maps are cowing us into a conclusion: only the most famous one – our strangeness accepts no time for more. So let´s look for some squares full of colour…

Somehow I had imagined all here in a more giant way. Kreml, St. Basils, GUM, the mausoleum…a historical quadrangle, that´s asking for lesser place than expected. But maybe it´s the greatness of the names, the breath of the important ghosts, what makes every step so historical. We´re passing the cinerary urns of Gagarin (Greetings to Anna Magnani, my dear…), Gorki, Zetkin, Breschnew, Stalin and John Reed, rolling by orphaned mausoleums and we´re inhaling decadence and needlessness in world-famous malls just for finishing wearily at the opposite end of cultural routes. Fastfood-tumours and their rampant spores. (Maybe it was an historical irony, that Ricardo was´nt able to enter Lenin´s resting place, dashing against distances, security checks and missing coins!)

5:pm...Airport Moscow

Airports and their excitement, autographs caused by Teutonic mistakes and a weather, that is delaying departures. Two more cigarettes in a heartfelt Antartica and a rough calculation of the Russian rouble treasure. Presents for those, who stayed home and coffein for the presence. Only one time zone left and we´re back at the starting point. Doors are closing and belts have to be fasten, doors are opening and a shuttle takes us unbelievable 25 meters to the homelike terminal. And embraces again, but this time for other reasons…
Inhaling…at home…expiration…

Später…Club City I Voronezh

Was will er mir sagen?

***********************************************************

somewhere...between Moscow and Voronezh...

And sleepers again and again a teeth-grinding difference between body length and lying area. Everybody is sleeping, but only one band is carrying on negotiations with a hawker´s tray woman. It´s about some piffling cash and the sound of her voice is lurid and excited and it´s causing creeps with those, who are begging for some sleep. About six hours still to Voronezh and I realize, that no one of us has any idea where exactly we will be tomorrow! An odyssey in the skull of a huge country, no geography, only unpronounceable villages, passing by in the darkness of Russian Nights. About six hours and the hope for some sleep…

Voronezh

About 9:am...a station and no time to think about. Lets´s get out as long as the train is stopping. And still before visions of twilight years, spent in a continents away void, are able to assume a form, hands are appearing right out of the nowhere, reaching for luggage and instruments and just a few seconds later we´re standing on a platform, discreetly covered with snow. We are there. Voronezh – imaginary, distant end of the rainbow, home of a record label. And names become faces and uncertainty makes way for an anticipation...

One second later…a flat, hired especially for us and it offers all those things, which are able to delight victims of civilisation. Beds, showers, toilets and meanwhile Vitaly and the rest of our hosts are preparing breakfast in the kitchen, I notice how comfortable it can feel to exhale quietly. Down there, some people are taking dogs for walkies, coming home or diving head first into the day and behind some doors I hear the rattling of pots and plates – and for a short moment I feel something like a calming normality. For a very short moment…

I guess it´s 10:am and there are three bottles of vodka standing in the middle of the table. For the fact, that the breakfast will be delayed a little while, the essential welcoming will be brought forward a moment. Alternatives are beer and coffee (and I swear, this kind of coffee would come under the narcotics regulation in this part of the world!) With pleasant anticipation you´re holding glasses out towards us and before you can react in a mid-european way the first „ Nastrovje” is resounding through the room. This is followed by intensive communication and a bountiful table, that would exceed all expectations even without the last night. There´s some curiosity shimmering in the air. The German scene, the Russian counterpart, the difficulties to run a lable here, the difficulties to find one there. A trans-bordering flat share-atmosphere and further sequels in a series of global cheers. The first ones are finking out and fighting against vodka and the others slowly get the feeling to find home.

Later...on the banks of the Voronezh [51°40'N 39°11'E]

Sightseeing...an orthodox culture injection and familiar strangeness on both sides of a river. It´s cushy and it´s relaxing, it´s cosy and it´s pleasing…almost an infantil cockiness. Snowball fights and drinks to go, insights into Russian rituals and icons for the beloved ones at home. Somehow it seems, that the stress of the past days is forgotten in a crystalline way and for a little moment the reason for our presence here too. Concerts? Who knows…right now there´s polar air filling our lungs and between altars for unknown saints and the pantheon of light switches we start to change our citizenship for a little bit…or to call it into question at least…

A record store in the middle of the town. Not these kind of an entertainment-wyvern, but rooms full of noticeable passion and musical niches. What a strange feeling to look in your own face on posters, far away from geographical catchment areas and what a strange feeling to meet strange people in strange countries, which are easily to make happy with just an autograph of you! Paradoxical and coaxing. And we´re signing everything, that offers space for letters…placards, CD´s, photographs…a gentle strangeness, that distracts almanacs. And slowly there´s a memory and a purpose creeping back in our minds and with them an individually distinguished anticipation regarding to today´s eve. So, back in the flat for continuing an apparently endless ingestion (Question: What ingredients you can find in a so-called “Russian salad”? Answer: Every…) and Celebration of birthdays. Nastrovje at command and out of skins and furs for diving into todays and the wanted things…

Later…Club City I Voronezh

Meanwhile Cold Design and Spiders Upstairs are making great shows and the local patriotism is heating up the air, the audience´s quantity takes on vertiginous dimensions. Word for word. Congested corridors and besieged bars and between timid requests for memorable photographs, presents (Will I ever spare some time to read Burroughs in Russian?) and autographs upon all what´s conservable, there´s a feeling creeping up on me, that this eve will become a very special one. So bloody far away and the people know your name, almost different continets and the people know your face. And bigger than the joyous expectation around, the excitement is getting inside. The final, that insolently directs itself with the gloves off, regardless of the fact, that we have to leave after it…

much later ...

It´s tight here. Two spotlights and both in an active exchange – the stage and the bar. The City Club is´nt the biggest venue necessarily, but tonight it rapes it´s capacity. Cigarettes and whispering faces, coffee for calming down and Babylonian late sequelae. What is he wanting to tell me? The fact that he has coosen William Seward´s “Junkie” as a present for me, should make me wonder, but…I´m too much as sober as a judge for cyrillic script! Somewhere in the hubbub of faces I can detect a few familiar ones and Vitaly is nervous. The female side of the Spiders sounds complacently like Siouxsie and Vitaly is nervous. Look around, brother in mind, we are the ones, who have to be nervous! Shaking hands and flash lights, gentle smilings caused by embraces and hidden glances at the clock. Twenty minutes left til to the last of the phantoms…

anytime…Midnight...

Final. From outside I can still hear the chorals of strange, but versant bandnames and inside all is quiet. We don´t have to look at each other in order to know what the single one is thinking. Scrambling and dancing people, stretching hands and singing along and all this on a place, no one of us had the slightest geographical notion of until lately! It´s an expiration and it´s pride, it´s bloody delightful and it´s soothingly warm. Every smiling pair of eyes, every noisily hailed song. If there is this line in the song “Ewigheim”: “…there is no place for strangers…”, then I´m feeling a bit ashamed for those words now. The choir´s becoming louder and I think it´s time for an encore. The fact, that the reappearing of Christian and Dirk on stage is causing ovations, makes me sent out my thanks to Fortunae for the fertility of our body of work. So come on Nova, they´re calling for us…

Later...the last note is fading away and in the backstage area (outlandishly davenportless) some memories get preserved and some self-esteems become newly defined and I have no idea what is making this moment more fragile and unreal: the fact, that we know about our leaving or the circumstance, that we have about fifteen minutes for this! Somewhere a bus is starting it´s engine and inside there are seven seats, marked by our names. Fifteen minutes to box the spell´s ear, fifteen minutes to file the whole inventory and to stumble through confused faces out in cold november nights, visibly ready to leave. Fifteen minutes to freeze some visions of jamborees. Anger is followed by female sieges to men´s lavatories, piece-signings, panic in realizing the mountains of luggage and last drinks in a hurry. Whose cable is this?…the engine is running…Is this Eric´s guitar?…and the engine is running…Is there any goddamned bus later?…No, only this one and it´s engine is running…Well, all right Vitaly and all you fellows, taken to our hearts…bus-drivers are angrily consulting a watch and the other passengers are shuffling with their feet. Last embraces and the weepy affirmed certainty, that we have to leave now. Bye, bye Voronezh, no more a blank spot on the map by now…

Side note: A few days after arriving at home again, Vitaly wrote me about the fact, that the area, the club is located today, was a giant cemetery decades ago, that was removed in the course of historical urban planning. (according to public sources at least!) If this is right and if this had any effects I want to leave without reply, rolling by in cold, southern Russian air…)

A RUSSIAN AUTUMN Part3

Moskau

Moskau I Club Relax

später...Moskau I Club Relax

Moscow

Almost nine hours later and we´re standing on a track in Moscow. We are tourists. Obviously. Help- and planless and to a certain extent overtiredly confused. But let´s dismiss this a logical consequence, a direct sequel to the fact, that we´re here for the first time. Unfortunately this seems to hold true for our contact person too and so it starts a hour-long odyssey through Russian metro stations and streets, places and corners of Moscow even a Muscovite did´nt know, probably. Viewed in this light there´s no cause for a lament yet, but only if you not take the temperatures and the mountains of baggage on backs and shoulders into account! (That the desiderated accomodations was a humbling casa non grata I want to mention only marginal, so like the fact that the wish for 18 cups of coffee caused excessive demand!)

Moscow I Club Relax

The club is hidden in the belly of a very modern and ugly theatre. Fortunately you don´t realize this down here. Long, brick-built corridors, which impart futher rooms on the left and right from time to time. Bars, wardrobes, toilets…a cushy confusion, calling cluttered Minoic associations and every trip to the toilet is combined with the appeal to Ariadne for some support. Und finally a backstage. Not really capacious (not anywhere near!), but on the other hand a slight case of cosiness. The more so as the 18-headed musical battalion has increased by yesterday´s body-artists, clamorous and centered dames (which are smoking cigarettes with holders like some protagonists from the books of Carroll) and other club fixtures. But the fulness of a room is a matter of opinion. And drinks again, that ask too much of tables and bodies at once. The fact, that drumkits are´nt complete for now seems to be a minor matter, the main point is the policy of liquid victuals. Reliable material and timetable-anarchy, vodka and cross-talks, that (listen with half an ear) seem to deal only with the topic of procreation. A slight kind of melancholy, because it´s the last collective night with Expretus and Sins of the Flesh, so let´s lift up the glasses and three cheers for the German-Japanese friendship. (Let´s connive at the fact that the acoustic on stage is like the luxury in Russian sleepers – decent but functional.)

Later...Performance artists, that seems to be strange to pain, working on themselves with mobile tackers and friendly muscial fellowships, that seem to be strange to pain, addressing informally with the inebriation. Shredded words are oscillating somewhere between “Pussies…” and “Pathology…” and the closer the stagetime is creeping, the more I think that no one here inside is here inside for this. I miss some twilight and some dawn, silent mists and noisy pathos. Look at the ghosts of the past three days, look how they´re getting themselves free in the form of shapeless billows and sinking surfaces. Somehow the club´s name is dictating the mood. The last day of Radio Inferno – a slight kind of melancholy…

Later...Moskau I Club Relax

Sins of the Flesh are still on stage, when the clock reminds us of departure. A gentle disillusion with the ending, because not only the catering, even the audience has cleared out by now. But Sins of the Flesh don´t care about it (so like Expretus, but for other reasons!). Somehow I think they play their most thrusting gig for the last days. There´s still the blood of today´s performance, gleaming on the ground and in a strange way I like the surrealism of our good-bye. Jude, dressed in black leather and bob-wig, is singing for the final, Ai is dancing the dances of Vitus and isolated little girls are screaming their minds to heaven. I´ll miss it. So long, Mr. Alabaster, I know that ways will cross again and greeting to your compagnions, breathing jag somewhere backstage…shaking hands and last embraces, last notes and promises of reunions. Coldness and cars are waiting outside and without any break it goes on to the next nocturnal station. (I don´t know why, but in some way all Russian stations look scary similar at night!) Now…Moscow in the back and a enjoyable self-sufficient uncertainty in direction of tomorrow…
